What does Carrier & Affected mean?

One of the most important things to do when breeding is to DNA test your dogs. There are many different companies that offer DNA tests for dogs, DK'S Sassy River Retriever&Shelties  uses Embark.

Embark tests for well over 200 genetic markers. They test for breed and non breed specific. That means that your dog will be tested for genetic variants that it's specific breed is prone to, and ones that other breeds are prone to. 

Being a carrier is when your dog tests for one copy of a genetic variant. They are not affected and if bred to a NON carrier their puppies will not be affected. 

Affected is when your dog tests positive for two copies of a genetic variant. This is any variant that the company you chose tests for. If you breed an affected dog to a non affected dog you will have a litter of 100% carriers. Breeding an affected dog to a carrier you will have a litter of 50% carrier and 50% affected. Breeding a carrier to a carrier 50% is a carrier, 25% is clear and 25% is affected. Breeding two affected dogs together you have a litter of 100% affected puppies.

Although we love to only breed clear DNA dogs, there are reasons behind every litter we produce. So if we breed a carrier to a non carrier it just means the litter has a purpose! This is why we restrict full breeding rights until a puppy is DNA tested and clear. 

ICH or Ichthyosis is one of the most common mutations Golden Retrievers. If you breed two carriers together they will produce a percentage of affected puppies in their litter. These affected puppies will have dry, flaky, and ichy skin. In some cases the dogs experience hairloss. This can be treated with vet guidance on proper nutrition, shampoos, etc. This isn't life threatening, but it is very uncomfortable for the dogs and owners. Some people describe it as very bad dandruff. This is why we make sure our puppies are clear before allowing breeding rights!
