I feel like it's time to introduce myself. My name is Destiny Knight. I am the owner and creator of DK'S Sassy River Retrievers&Shelties.
I've had some people ask why I breed, how many litters a year do I have, what I expect from my dogs, etc. So let me answer a few things for you! I grew up in a breeding home. My parents used to raise Shetland Sheepdogs as well as my grandma that raised them and Collies. I've always loved them and admired every litter they produced. I always wanted to have my own but I never really knew what breed I wanted. I obviously loved Shelties, and will continue to breed them, but I've always loved other breeds and wanted to find a breed that adapts well, is smart, devoted, easy to train, willing, food/toy motivated, loving, etc. Along with a breed that has a long double coat because I have a groomers heart!
One day I was at my friend's house after work and it was dark (second shifters) I heard something running up the road in their subdivision. It was dark and I could barely see. This big boy got closer and I could tell it was a Golden Retriever! He was covered in mud and so exhausted. We walked around to see if anyone knew who he belonged to but it was late and nobody was awake. So I took him home. I gave him a bath, got him dried, and I fell in love. He was SO smart. So sweet. He was goofy. Big. He was a dork, and I wanted him so bad. I made a post on Facebook to try and get him home, and luckily his owners stopped by my friend's house asking if anyone had seen him! So I drove over there and they were reunited. That boy (Yeti) started it all. I did a lot of research on them, watched videos, and searched pages where breeders sell them. I found one I absolutely adored, and then I got scammed... So my search was on hold for a while. Then. I finally found my DREAM dog. He came from Alabama and his name is Archie. It's been an amazing 4 almost 5 years with my little theif. I still didn't plan to breed not until 2020. After tons of research I finally had my first litter.
My goals have been to produce healthy, strong, athletic, and family oriented dogs. I have yet to have a displeased family. All of my babies have went to loving homes, and have made their owners beyond happy. Which is exactly what I bred them to do.
How many litters a year do I have? One or two! We are dedicated to producing the best puppies possible. I spend a lot of time with each litter. In order to give them the best I do not mass produce. That wouldn't give me a lot of time to spend individually with each litter.
What do I expect from my dogs? I expect them to live 10+ years, be free of any genetic issues, be healthy, and do what they were bred to do. Whether that be pets, service, working, etc. I expect them to be dogs, make mistakes, learn, and have the best owners to guide them and set them up for success.
I have big plans for these tiny babies I welcome into the world. I am so blessed to be able to bring such a joy into people's lives. Most of us all know that we aren't complete without a dog in our home. Some people have a rough start to getting their forever pet. I've been scammed before so I completely understand. I want to be reliable and create a field of trust with all of my families. Most of the families my puppies have gone to are now my most cherished friends. This isn't a hobby it's a community. ❤️
