Starting off our Puppy Kindergarten with Week One. Week one (or 8 weeks) your puppy will already know it's name, be comfortable with a collar, and be used to having it's face and paws touched, be used to the bath, blow drying, and having nails cut.
Training at 8 weeks old will start with "sit" and "yes" and "no"
Your puppy will be trained with a clicker and treats. Clicker training sets your puppy up for success. Which is our goal. You want to be patient with your puppy during these weeks, and give them very simple instructions to set them up for success. We train with a "leave on a good note" policy. These really are baby steps! Clicker training helps us achieve this goal by giving them something interesting to direct their attention to us! Then of course treats as always for something good to associate with the clicker!
By week two your puppy should be excelling at sit, yes, and no. "Sit" is the base to EVERY single thing your puppy will learn. It is all about body motion! Once your puppy understands "sit" we begin to teach "lay down" or "down" (don't confuse down with off) Always remember to use simple words when training your puppy so they don't get confused!
We will also be teaching your puppy "stay" these two commands go together because "down" is the position we want them to be in to "stay" this also goes along with their next command!
Week three your puppy should know: sit, yes, no, down and stay. Now we will teach your puppy "place" and how to walk on a leash.
"Down" sets the motion for "place" We use place as a time for you to get some things done without your sweet puppy getting tangled up in your feet. "Place" is going to teach them to stay in a designated area until you tell them it's okay to come to you.
Your puppy will learn how to walk on the leash, and this is perfect timing for "no" they will have learned in week one! "No" will be used because at this point puppies LOVE to chew. The leash will be the ultimate toy, and we will teach your puppy that it is not okay to chew the leash!
Lastly we have came to week four! By this time your puppy should know: sit, yes, no, down, stay, place, and off.
We will be working on "off" during week four. Off is very very important, and sometimes something overlooked by us new owners (I am also guilty). This command is going to teach them absolutely NO paws on me! This is such a cute invitation while they are cute little babies, but that cute puppy will quickly turn into a hyper 50lbs+ adult. It is super important to stop this behavior before it even gets a chance to start.
The one thing I'm sure you are wondering about is what about potty training? As most of you may know potty training is a tricky subject. This is something that can be influenced by environmental changes, stress, excitement, scheduling, etc. It is very important to know that there are absolutely NO guarantees that your puppy will be 100% potty trained when you get them. Moving to a new home with a completely different schedule is going to disturb the potty training that we will be doing here. However your puppy will have a very good baseline of where to use the bathroom, but please remember to be patient with your puppy, and stick to a schedule!
We will be starting potty training quite early while the puppies are still in the same area together. We do this with a grass pad! When the puppies are up to date on their vaccines, and it is safe to go outside we will move the grass pad outside at various times for potty. We will use the word "potty" as we take them outside so they will know what it means. Your puppy will also be started on individual crate training.
Week four is their last week with us. It is a sad yet very exciting time! We are so excited to be able to offer this, and can not wait to see how your puppy progresses, and how they impress you with their skills at home! Please send us an email if you want to enroll in Puppy Kindergarten, and send any questions you may have!
Will I miss out on the puppy stage?
Absolutely not! Your puppy will still very much be a puppy, and will still be cute and cuddly when you get it home. Your puppy will also be playful and will still need consistency in training when it comes to stay with you. We will give you a run through on how your puppy knows these sweet moves so you can continue at home!
Can you do a home delivery?
Depending on how far away you are from us we can deliver to you, or meet you closer to where you live!
How much does Puppy Kindergarten cost?
Puppy Kindergarten is an awesome service we are offering and it is a lot of work! This includes board, train, vetting after 8 weeks, and food. Each week is $300. This is separate from the cost of your puppy, and is not due until your puppy is picked up.
Can you keep after 12 weeks?
We can, however, 12 weeks is a really good time to get your puppy used to you, your home, and lifestyle. If there is a planned trip, event, etc and you need us to keep your puppy a little longer we can do that for you! The fees are an extra $50 to maintain training and board your puppy for an extra week and longer will have to be discussed accordingly.
